TRANSECTS : LAC CHARNEUVE

The Site - Lac Charneuve

In this exercise we studied the shore surrounding an artificial lake near the village of Chareneuve. The lake covers an area of 4 hectares and it is 1 metre deep.

1785 The lake of Chareneuve was created to control the flow of the Boucheron, a stream which flows through the lake. The lake also provided a water supple for the village.

1791 the lake was drained, as it was blamed for a plague of mosquitoes in the area, and the bed of the lake was turned into pasture until 1920.

1920 and 1925 a mill was built beside the newly refilled lake and a canal was dug to supply the mill with water power.

1955 the lake was abandoned again to become pasture.

1972 the lake was refilled with water after having been cleaned of undergrowth and trees.

1975 to 1983 it was left unattended.

1984 the Association Agrée de Péche et de Pisciculture (AAPP) of Neuvic took over the management of the lake. The bottom was cleaned, the channel of the feeder stream (the Boucheron) was cleaned, lime was added to the water to flocculate the organic matter suspended in the water and to raise the pH. The vegetation along the shore was cut back and the lake was stocked with carp. Trout are also present in the lake though they arrived naturally.

1992 No further management.
