Activity in a Changing Climate : Question 1
 Name: Class: School: Date:

A scientist wants to find out how good fur is at keeping an animal warm in cold weather.

(a) Design an experiment to test the hypothesis that fur prevents heat from leaving the body of an animal.
You cannot use live animals in this experiment.

Proposed method:

The scientist carried out his experiment to find out how quickly a body would lose heat in freezing cold temperatures. He compared a body covered in fur with a naked body. The results are given in the table opposite:

 Time/min Body Temperature /°C Covered in fur Naked 0 37 37 1 35 25 2 34 15 3 34 11 4 34 10 5 33 09 6 33 08

(b) Neatly draw a graph of these results together on graph paper. Put the lines for both set of results on the same axis.
(Body temperature /°C should be shown on the vertical axis.)

(c) How much does the temperature drop by in the fur-covered body over 6 minutes?

(d) How much does the temperature drop by in the naked body over 6 minutes

(e) How do you think that a frog, which has a naked skin, would behave in winter?
