The Measuring Cylinder

Measuring cylinders are used to measure volumes accurately.

Because scientists use them  to measure small and large volumes, measuring cylinders come in different sizes.

It is important to chose the correct measuring cylinder for the volume you wish to measure.

It is also important to take a careful look at the graduation scale on the measuring cylinder before you use it. Make sure that you know which volume is represented by the distance between two adjacent graduation marks.

Using a Measuring Cylinder

Always leave the measuring cylinder on a flat surface when you are reading the volume of the liquid it contains. You should move your body downwards so that your eye is on the same horizontal line as the surface of the liquid.

DO NOT lift the measuring cylinder to measure the volume of the liquid contained in it!
