Types of Reactions : Precipitation Reactions

In this type of reaction two solutions mixed together make one product which is insoluble. This product comes out of the solution and can be seen as a solid mass in the test tube.

In the reaction above sodium hydroxide solution is added to a solution of copper II nitrate. There are two products. Sodium nitrate is soluble and remains in solution. The copper II hydroxide, however, is insoluble and comes out of the solution. In this particular case the precipitate has a light blue colour.
