Equations using symbols and formulae

Example III :

The first step is to write the correct formulae:

Unbalanced equation

Ca

HNO3

Ca(NO3)2

H2

Balanced equation

Ca

2HNO3

Ca(NO3)2

H2

Before you work through some more examples just check again that you have the same number of each type of atom on both sides of the equation. Everything in brackets () is multiplied by the number outside the brackets. In this case the number of oxygen atoms in calcium nitrate is 3x2 = 6. The number of nitrogen atoms is 1x2 = 2.
