Odour Pungent odour
Density compared to air (heavier or lighter) Lighter than air

Chemical Properties

Solubility in water Very soluble in water. It reacts with water to form ammonium hydroxide solution.
Burning Does not support combustion
Moist pH paper Alkaline reaction
Red rose petals None
Specific test The only gas which will show an alkaline reaction to pH paper.

  • Found naturally as one of the gases given out by volcanoes.
  • It is also produced from decaying organic material
  • It is used in solution in household cleaning agents
