GROUP I : THE ALKALI EARTH METALS : REACTIONS

.1. With oxygen gas

The metal oxide is produced.

The metal will burn with a characteristic colour. Magnesium gives a bright white flame, calcium a dark red flame, strontium a crimson flame and barium a pale green flame.

Formation of the oxide: 2Mg + O2  2MgO

2. With water

Calcium will react with cold water. Magnesium will react with hot water or steam.

Mg + H2O MgO + H2

3. With acids

The metal salt is produced in solution and hydrogen gas is liberated. The reaction below shows magnesium with hydrochloric acid.

Mg + 2HCl  MgCl2  + H2

4. With hydrogen

Calcium, with gentle heating, will react with hydrogen gas to form calcium hydride.

Ca + H2  CaH2
