METAL OR NON-METAL?

Generally, the elements to the left and centre of the periodic table are metals and the elements to the right of the periodic table are non-metals.

There is a less definite region of the periodic table, near where the metals meet the non-metals. Here, as you might expect, there are atoms that show characteristics of both metals and non-metals. This group of elements are called the metalloids, which is from the Greek meaning "sort of metals".
