VOCABULARY

Developing country : a country which is changing from a poor or agricultural country to an industrial country.

Favela : a settlement/ house built by people who live on land which does not belong to them.

Latifundia : large farm owned by a wealthy businessman

Minifundia : small plot of farmland

Migration : movement from one area to another in order to look for work or food.

Deforestation : cutting down trees and clearing forests. Land may be cleared for a variety of reasons, such as for timber, industry, farming or road building.

Indigenous people : the native people of a region or area.

Drought : lack or shortage of water. A period of time when no rain falls.

Birth rate : the number of babies born each year for every 1000 people.

Ghost town : a town which was once busy and prosperous but which people no longer live in.
