Measuring Pressure Differences

The difference between two pressures can be measured using a manometer. This is simply a "u" shaped tube with some liquid in it.

 

p1 = p2

 

p1 > p2

In the second diagram above, the difference between p1 and p2 is equivalent to the pressure due to hmm of the liquid in the tube.

A manometer tells us nothing about the pressures p1 and p2, only the difference between them.
