You think that paper is non-living but was once part of a living thing.

You are correct!

Paper is made from the woody parts of trees. The trees are cut down, cut into pieces and then shaved. The shavings are added to water and this is made into a pulp. The paper pulp is then pressed into paper and dried. 'Natural' paper is not white. Chemicals are added to the pulp to bleach the paper. Much of the paper we use is recycled. This means it is made into a pulp again to produce usable paper.
