A large test tube containing same yeast and sugar solution was set up as shown in the diagram below. The bubbles of gas produced were passed through lime water (in the second test tube) by using a delivery tube.

Yeast Experiment

1. What would you expect to happen in the test tube containing lime water?

2. What does this observation tell us about the yeast in the test tube?

The number of bubbles of gas were counted. This was done with the water bath at six different temperatures. The temperatures and the results are shown below:

3. Plot a graph of these results

4. What do the results show? (State your observations.)

5. Why do you think that the yeast in the test tube produces less and less bubbles of gas as the temperature rises above 40°C?
